Overview. Class story, chapters 1-10. Instead of studying separate units about colors, numbers, weather, etc., students listen to and act out a yearlong saga that weaves together practical vocabulary and high-frequency expressions in the target language. Students participate in multiple hands-on culture projects that relate directly to the main character’s travels in the class story.

Curriculum. The Four Pillars (below) work in tandem with one another. These are not chronological units; they occur simultaneously, overlapping vocabulary in both probable (Center Work) and improbable (creative Storytelling) linguistic situations.

KINDERGARTEN — Students learn the name of and “travel to” a new Spanish-speaking country every few classes on our Floor Map, and do a project based on that country (we start in South America). The year tends to begin with science projects, which are highly visual and make Spanish more comprehensible for beginners. Our stuffed-animal hero Pato (duck) visits the classroom when possible — anyone have tips on ventriloquism that doesn’t lead to laryngitis?
