EQUATORIAL GUINEA: The Goliath Frog of Equatorial Guinea is the largest frog species in the world. It can jump up to 10 feet in one horizontal jump and weighs up to 7.3 pounds.
In class, we measured out ten feet with yardsticks, measured how tall we were, and then tried to “jump” our height. First graders didn’t quite reach ten feet in one jump, but many jumped their own height or farther—impressive! They had fun shouting, “¡SALTA!” (JUMP!). If you are required to take photos of lessons to post internally for families, this is a great opportunity to get midair action pics. They also colored Goliath frog coloring sheets, and made a racetrack out of masking tape on the tables to “race” my plastic jumping frogs.
This was the end unit of our Floor Map, after first graders mastered naming and locating all 21 Spanish-speaking countries. Equatorial Guinea is “last” on the map because we start in Chile and work our way north and then east, geographically speaking.
