In class, we spend 2-3 days on each mini-story, weaving in songs, projects, and routines around the plot. Click on a button to jump to a unit. Here is a song generated by AI about Pato, just for fun. You can find the PK4 Spanish Playlist on YouTube at this link.
NOTE: Unlike PK3—which follows the ABC alphabet order—PK4 classes teach letters in order of the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. However, connecting the Spanish curriculum to regular classroom units remains a stumbling block. For their Letter of the Week, do I teach words that start with L in Spanish (león, largarto)? And then get stuck trying to explain that a “J” makes an “H sound” in the target language? Or do I focus on weekly themes, and teach fiesta hawaiana for luau, even though it doesn’t start with L? This year, I’m tapping into the themes, but also pointing out words in Spanish that relate to the Letter of the Week.

Chapter 6 | My Five Senses
English: We extend our food coloring lesson to vinegar volcanoes. We use our five senses, smelling the vinegar (vs. water), touching the baking soda, hearing the fizzing sound, watching the reaction, but NOT tasting! Uh oh, Pato has to escape from the vinegar volcano! We play The Floor is Lava with DannyGo!
- 🌟Song: Danny Go! El piso es lava
- 🌟Cartoon: Pocoyo: Grande y pequeño
- 🌟Center: Volcano coloring pages, Fruit coloring pages

Chapter 7 | Friendship/ All About Colors
English: “Friends help each other.” Pato finds a treasure map. We are his friends, so we make him a Popsicle stick boat so he can go find the treasure. The treasure ends up being a shoebox full of stickers for everyone (his friends).
- 🌟Song: Los colores, All the Colors
- 🌟Cartoon:
- 🌟Center:
- 🌟Letter: E- Eric Carle
Chapter 8 | Fall
English: Pato brings up pets again. He wants a pet elephant. When I say no, he asks if he can have an elephant wearing a hat. No. “What about an elephant wearing TWO hats?” The compromise to avoid a total meltdown is telling him a story about an elephant. We make paper “sombrero hats” as a craft.
- 🌟Song: Danny Go! Rápido o lento
- 🌟Cartoon:
- 🌟Center:
- 🌟Letter: H- Hats/ Headbands
Chapter 9/10 | Pumpkins
English: Pato tells me that his favorite color is orange. He gets fixated on everything orange, and puts digital graffiti of orange ice cream cones and orange pumpkins and Chunk Monster Toy (orange Toy Story character) all over our elephant story from last week. He gets a time-out.
Week 2: Pato gets stuck inside a pumpkin. Finally, he gets out, and we play a game to make him feel better and less scared. We play Tingo, Tingo, Tango with Halloween “penalties,” but we all do them together.
- 🌟Song:
- 🌟Cartoon:
- 🌟Center:
- 🌟Letter: T- Toy Story
- 🌟Letter: I- Ice Cream, Ice Pops
Chapter 11 | Halloween
English: We pretend to be ghosts. We watch a funny episode of Pocoyó: Monster Mystery. We also make Worry Dolls to prepare, just in case we start to worry that Halloween might be scary (culture project).

- 🌟Letter: U- Uniform-Free/ Halloween Carnival
Chapter 12 | Nocturnal Animals
English: We play “Busca el murciélago” (look for the bat), but realize we can’t see him because it’s daytime and he is nocturnal. I make a bat out of glowsticks, so we only notice him when it is “nighttime”. Pato wants to be nocturnal and tries to stay up all night but gets cranky.
Pato shows us his collection of crazy sock pajamas and wonders if they can all fit into his suitcase at the same time. He is [obviously] hiding something in one of the socks but won’t tell us what it is.
- 🌟Song:
- 🌟Cartoon:
- 🌟Center:
- 🌟Letter: C- Crazy Socks
Chapter 13 | Thanksgiving/ Food
English: Food, Part 1. Pato wants to open a restaurant that serves a lot of food, but Pato Malo interferes when a customer—Mr. Wolf—comes to dine. We act out this story with the drive-through window and bank.
- 🌟Song:
- 🌟Cartoon:
- 🌟Center:
- 🌟Letter: O- Orange
Chapter 14 | Thanksgiving/ Thankful
English: Food, Part 2. Pato wants to play “FOOD-ball” after Thanksgiving dinner, and brings a raw egg as the ball, whose fate is to be smashed. I explain that he is thinking of fútbol (soccer), and that FOOD-ball is not an actual sport. He really wants to play, so I relent and he thanks me profusely.
- 🌟Song: we listen to their favorites (they choose from my curated list)
- 🌟Cartoon: Beach Vacation, Beach at Night
- 🌟Center: Thanksgiving coloring pages, Turkey “Pavo” fistbump joke
- 🌟Letter: Q- Queens/ Quarterbacks
Chapter 15 | Gingerbread
English: Gingerbread men story—see blog post. We also loop back to the idea of Pato and a pet elephant when learning about the “Radishes” (Mexico).
- 🌟Song:

- 🌟Letter: S- Santa Hats
Chapter 17 | Christmas
English: We scribble colorful squiggles on different sheets up papers, and then set up markers like bowling pins (vertically) on each drawing (one at a time). Next, we take turns misting the markers with a spray bottle so that they fall over. The water wets the paper and mixes the colorful scribbles. When the papers dry, fourth graders cut out snowflakes from the dyed paper. They end up looking really nice! Note: you can use food coloring, too, but that’s a little more involved and can stain other surfaces.
- 🌟Song: Feliz Navidad, Cascabeles, Mi hombre de nieve
- 🌟Cartoon: Travesura navideña, Danny Go! Navidad
- 🌟Center: Christmas cat coloring pages, Christmas gnome coloring pages, Gingerbread house coloring pages, Elf coloring pages

Chapter 20 | Rocks & Minerals
English: Pato decides he wants to hibernate, but what he really means is to ask if he can wear his pjs and watch cartoons. He doesn’t want to actually rest or sleep. I suggest that we do a diamond/ gem activity instead. He is agreeable to the idea, as long as he gets to stay in his pjs. #deal
- 🌟Song: Animales nocturnos
- 🌟Cartoon: Bluey- Murciélago de la fruta
- 🌟Center: Owl coloring pages, Bat coloring pages
- 🌟Letter: P- PJs
#tratohecho
